“We will yet keep struggling. Long live the Great Socialist October Revolution!”
What a difference a year makes.
When I posted this graphic last year on the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution (October 25 by the old Russian calendar, November 7 on the modern calendar), even sympathetic readers might have wondered if revolutionary socialism would ever be on the agenda again in our lifetimes.
Now, after the Arab Spring, mass uprisings against austerity in Europe, and the burgeoning Occupy movement in the U.S. and worldwide, it’s clear that, as Lenin said, “Sometimes decades can pass and nothing happens; and then sometimes weeks can pass and decades happen.”
There have been terrible setbacks too: the destruction of Libya’s sovereignty by U.S/NATO, the lynching of nationalist leader Moammar Gadhafi, and the murder just two days ago of Colombian communist leader Alfonso Cano, to name a few.
But the tide is turning. And today, as communist revolutionaries worldwide commemorate the 94th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution and the founding of the world’s first socialist republic in Russia, it is fitting that we redouble our efforts to bring to the new movements, in creative and non-sectarian ways, the critical lessons of Lenin and the Bolsheviks’ experience:
The need for a revolutionary Marxist party and program
The crucial role of the working class, employed and unemployed, in fighting the system
Thoroughgoing anti-imperialism
Critical importance of combating National Oppression and building solidarity with people of color, women, queer people and all who suffer special oppressions
The class nature of the police and capitalist state, and the need for workers and oppressed peoples to defend themselves
The dual power struggle between the old state and the new people-power in the making
The importance of a socialist perspective and goal
and so much more!
Every year for the last 94 years, we communists have said: The lessons of October are relevant and vital to peoples fighting for their liberation.
In 2011, not only are these words still true; they are well on their way to taking center stage even in the heartland of imperialism.
Long live the legacy of Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution!
Long live the fighting spirit of the Soviet people! We will never forget you and your great sacrifices for the world revolution!
Workers and oppressed peoples of the world unite!

UNITE!
